Frequently Asked Questions

Can both girls and boys join?

Yes, the NZCF accepts Cadets of any gender.

How old must I be to join?

You can join if you are 13 to 15 years old, or if you are 12 years old and in Year 9. See our "Join Us" page for more info.

How long can I serve for?

Most Cadets will stay for 4 years and complete their training. After that, if you are a senior cadet, you can serve until your 20th birthday, providing you have been properly security vetted.

What does the NZDF provide me with?

The Defence Force will provide uniform, except for footwear. They also provide training facilities, fund promotional courses and subsidize International Exchanges.

What's up with uniform?

We will issue you two sets of uniform, plus a unit shirt. These are free of charge, but must be dry-cleaned and returned upon completion of your cadet career.

What opportunities do you offer?

In short, Cadets will take part in unique adventurous, fun, and educational activities, in a military-like environment. We aim to develop Cadets' sense of purpose, responsibility, confidence, discipline, and ability. Many former Cadets comment on the cadet experience that helped them to develop as an individual.

What does the training consist of?

We provide training in a number of different subjects, such as bushcraft, marksmanship, and aviation, with the aim of developing Cadets as young adults, and providing unique experiences. For more info on training, click here

How safe is my child?

Our Cadets' safety is our top priority.

All NZCF activities will have a set amount of Officers present.

Our Officers all undergo risk management training on their Commissioning Course.

In order to conduct bushcraft activities, Officers must qualify on the NZCF Field Craft Course, this course also incorporates first aid training.

In order to conduct shooting  activities, Officers must have completed firearms safety, range safety, and shooting coaches courses before they are able to conduct any form of firearms training.

The NZCF does not tolerate unacceptable behaviour of any kind. Cadets and staff must abide by the NZCF Code of Conduct which defines appropriate codes of ethical behaviour and provides guidelines for preventing, managing and reporting breaches of these codes.

How much does it cost?

Our school term fees are $85. Certain activities may also have additional costs.
